NEW CAPITALISM SERVES HUMANITY’S MOST PRESSING NEEDS

In 2010 the Autostadt Wolfsburg, Germany was host to the Global Social Business Summit 2010, where around 350 participants gathered to network and exchange expertise with the global social business community. For the first time the Young Challengers Meeting took place where students and young professionals came to gather to discuss social business and questions to challenge decision makers during the summit. In a public speech Prof. Yunus and Paolo Coelho inspired the audience about social business.

 

 

ANNOUNCEMENT OF SOCIAL BUSINESS AMBASSADORS

 

In order to support Prof. Yunus’ vision to eradicate poverty through social business, international best-selling author Paulo Coelho and Australian actor Hugh Jackman have become “social business ambassadors”, with the aim to spread awareness of social business worldwide.

 

 

ANNOUNCEMENT OF YY HAITI

 

After the earthquake in January, the Grameen Creative Lab and SAP jointly started the YY Haiti initiative. Both parties strongly believe in improving the economic and social conditions in Haiti through social business.

 

The use of technology is a key driver of SAP’s CSR efforts around the world. YY Haiti supports the start-up of social businesses in Haiti through 1) a Grameen Creative Lab Haiti, which will identify potential social business entrepreneurs as well as help and monitor the set up of the social businesses; 2) the social businesses will also be supported by the “YY Haiti Social Business Fund Inc.”, a financing vehicle that pools funds from social investors all over the world and allocates them to eligible social businesses in Haiti.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF YUNUS SOCIAL BUSINESS FUND MUMBAI

 

The Yunus Social Business Fund Mumbai is the first social business fund in India. The fund is managed out of Mumbai and is ready to invest into and incubate social businesses across multiple sectors in India.

 

 

EBS UNIVERSITY: DANONE ENDOWED CHAIR OF SOCIAL BUSINESS TO BE LAUNCHED

 

The EBS University launched the Danone Endowed Chair of Social Business in November 2010. As the first chair for social business in Germany, it will have a focus on research about social business and how this can also be implemented in developing countries. The EBS is the leading German private business school with 180 partner universities worldwide.

 

 

ANNOUNCEMENT OF SOCIAL BUSINESS CITY WIESBADEN

 

Wiesbaden is the first city worldwide to implement a comprehensive social business concept, known as a “Social Business City”. This includes, among others, the following initiatives: founding of various new social businesses; transformation of existing businesses into social businesses; setting up a financial infrastructure for social businesses; establishing social business incubators who can support Wiesbaden as well as partner cities in the creation of social business cities.

 

The long-term vision will be for Wiesbaden to be an international hub for social business and an inspiration for social responsibility.

 

 

LAUNCH OF PROF. YUNUS’ NEW BOOK IN GERMANY

 

The new book by Prof. Yunus, “Building Social Business: The New Kind of Capitalism that Serves Humanity’s Most Pressing Needs” has been translated into German, and has been available since September 2010 (German title: “Social Business: Von der Vision zur Tat”). Prof. Yunus presented the German version of his new book for the first time in person at the Global Social Business Summit 2010.
