In 2011 the Global Social Business Summit moved to Vienna in Austria. 500 participants came together to discuss latest achievements and strategies of future developments. The summit was held over a course of three days adding the theme of culture and arts. In a panel discussion Prof. Yunus and his daughter Monica Yunus, who is a renowned opera singer, discussed which contribution culture can make to social business.
On the day prior to the summit, the Young Challengers Meeting was held again and for the first time the Academia Meeting gathered academics from around the world and offered the unique opportunity to share their work in the field of social business within research, practice and teaching.
On the occasion of the Global Social Business Summit 2011 a TEDx event focused on social business was held as well featuring Prof. Yunus, Hans Reitz and many other experts and entrepreneurs of the social business movement as speakers.
ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE EU SOCIAL BUSINESS INITIATIVE

László Andor, European Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion presented the EU Social Business Initiative to support the creation and development of social businesses. The initiative contains 11 priority measures organized around 3 themes: making it easier for social businesses to obtain funding, increasing the visibility of social business and making the legal environment friendlier for social businesses.
Commissioner Andor talked with social business entrepreneurs and gathered input for the Conference on Social Economy and Social Business hosted by the EU Commission shortly after the summit in Brussels with participation of Prof. Yunus and the team of The Grameen Creative Lab.
In 2012, the EU Commission created an expert group to consult the Commission in implementing the Social Business Initiative, where Hans Reitz as a member of the expert group takes an active part. More information about the Social Business Initiative: click here.
ANNOUNCEMENT OF YUNUS SOCIAL BUSINESS
Prof. Yunus, Saskia Bruysten (former Co-CEO & Strategic Director of GCL), Sophie Eisenmann (former Director of GCL) and Hans Reitz founded a new company called Yunus Social Business GmbH (YSB). YSB will focus in their work on setting up social business incubator funds and advisory services to companies, governments, foundations and NGOs. ANNOUNCEMENT OF A NEW “SOCIAL BUSINESS AMBASSADOR”
In order to support Prof. Yunus’ work and to spread awareness about social business, NASA astronaut Ron Garan has became a social business ambassador. Prof. Yunus and NASA astronaut Ron Garan came together at the Global Social Business Summit 2011 to discuss in a public speech a bold vision of our time: banning poverty into museums.
