POWER OF INNOVATION

TO CHANGE THE WORLD

More than 550 participants attended the Global Social Business Summit 2012 to explore the theme Power of Innovation – To Change the World. The summit was hallmarked by its innovative formats applying the “Swarm Works” tool in utilizing the knowledge and expertise of every single participant at a time.

In a common effort participants worked on action plans to increase the social impact through social business addressing the following key questions: How to create jobs for 7 billion people on the planet? What needs to be done to foster a global network for social business? How can we better attract investors for social business? What should be the role of governments in social business? How can we leverage the use of new technology for social business? How can we use the potential of young people for social business?

After those work loaded and impactful days the summit was rounded up with a joyful YY Party to network and celebrate another successful Global Social Business Summit. The results from the summit can be reviewed in the Follow-up Report.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF YUNUS AMAZON SOCIAL BUSINESS INITIATIVE BY STATE VICE-GOVERNOR, MR. HELENILSON PONTES

The Yunus Amazon Social Business Initiative was launched by State Vice-Governor, Mr. Helenilson Pontes during the Global Social Business Summit 2012. It is a concrete step to take the social business idea to the Brazilian Amazon region.

Realizing the potential contribution that social business can make to solve many of the social problems faced by poor people in the Amazon rainforest, Prof. Muhammad Yunus invited the Government of Pará State to participate in the Global Social Business Summit and challenged them to become the “first social business state in Brazil”. Pará is the second largest state in the Brazilian Amazon. “Because social businesses are sustainable by definition, we believe we can create a truly sustainable social business economy in the Amazon based on the sustainable use of some components of our biodiversity such as fruits, oils, nuts, medicinal plants, and other non-wood forest products.

Ultimately, we believe we can add an environmental dimension to the concept of social business in order to solve many of our problems at the same time: reduce poverty, create green jobs, generate sustainable local income, and promote environmental conservation, among others”, said Mr. Pontes. The Yunus Amazon Social Business Initiative also includes promoting the social business idea to the nine states in the Brazilian Amazon and encouraging them to design and implement social business initiatives with an environmental approach.
